Add to basketA handsome 18th-century Geneva edition of the collected medical works of Thomas Sydenham (1624â "1689), often hailed as â the English Hippocrates.â This Opera Medica brings together Sydenhamâ s most influential Latin treatises, including his celebrated studies on acute diseases, smallpox (variolarum), hysteria, gout (de arthritide), and fevers, as well as his letters and clinical observations that laid the foundation for modern epidemiology and bedside medicine. The edition includes an engraved frontispiece portrait of Sydenham and is notable for its crisp typography and clean, wide-margined pagesâ "typical of the De Tournes press of Geneva, one of Europeâ s most respected Enlightenment-era printers. This Editio Novissima (â latest editionâ ) claims revision and expansion beyond earlier 17th- and early 18th-century printings, featuring editorial refinements and an expanded index. The work represents the culmination of Sydenhamâ s collected writings, reflecting the empirical spirit that transformed medical practice from scholastic speculation toward systematic clinical observation. A key text for historians of medicine, early modern science, and the transition from Galenic to rationalist methods of diagnosis and treatment. Condition & Binding:ÂTwo volumes, quarto (approx. 10 x 8 in.), contemporary full calf, with raised bands and richly gilt-tooled compartments; red morocco spine labels titled Sydenh. Opera and Tom. Iâ "II. Boards are rubbed and worn with surface abrasions, small losses to spine ends, and some chipping to gilt tooling; joints cracked but holding. Endpapers show light toning and faint pencil notes; red edges remain vivid. Internally clean, bright, and crisp, with only light foxing and minor handling marks.
