Prose fails. High‑stakes systems break not from carelessness, but from weak governance. We build rigid software—robots, infrastructure, AI—and try to constrain it with policy, rules of engagement, and prompts. The result is a predictable failure of grammar.
This book argues that catastrophic failures arise from a missing vocabulary for refusal. A system’s language defines what it can control. When the execution substrate is more expressive than the rules that govern it, the system fails in the gaps. Across aerospace, finance, and AI, this structural cost is the Babel Tax.
Omega is the cure. It is a formally specified “periodic table of governance” for autonomous systems. Using thirteen core primitives, Omega maps every rule an engine needs: duties, permissions, powers, and bounds. It reveals the missing elements in everything from hardware security to AI alignment.
Omega is not a programming language; it is a description language interpreted by an external Safety Kernel. The host system (your Python, C, or Rust) simply routes high‑stakes actions through this kernel. The law lives outside the code being governed.
Omega offers two profiles: the Strict Profile (decidable and static) for real‑time safety in drone swarms or vehicles, and the Extended Profile for mapping complex authority hierarchies.
This is a clean break from alignment‑by‑prompt. A prompt is a suggestion inside the system; it can be ignored. Omega is the formal dual: a compiled, auditable constitution the system cannot bypass. If your “can we do this?” logic currently lives in a narrative document, this book offers the grammar to finally close that wound.
