Item description from seller

1983 signed and inscribed first edition, Ventura Historical Society (Ventura, California), 6 x 9 inches tall paperback in glossy pictorial covers, illustrated with black-and-white photographs, x, 191 pp. Very slight creasing and edgewear to covers. Nicely signed by the author, Edith Moore Jarrett (1898-1988), a prominent Fillmore historian and founder of the Fillmore Historical Museum, on the half title page, and inscribed 'For Virginia, of one of Fillmore's best pioneer families.' Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked. ~SP13~ [2.0P] Documents the early history and folklore of Fillmore, California, a small city in Ventura County, in the Santa Clara River Valley. In an agricultural area with rich, fertile soil, Fillmore has a historic downtown that was established when the Southern Pacific built the railroad through the valley in 1887. The book is a collection of anecdotes and factual history concerning Fillmore's pioneer days. Includes detailed accounts of early horse-drawn vehicles like surreys, buckboards, and 'tallyhos,' as well as the transition to early automobiles. Information on the development of railroads in the area. Memories of early firefighting and the daily lives of well-known local figures like the Casner and Ealy families.
