Dustwrapper has small tears and small piece missing near base spine, but unclipped and protected in removable clear plastic sleeve. William Hole (1846-1917), painter and etcher, known for his historical and biblical images and his mural decoration. The Old Testament History was his final masterwork: a sequel to his Life of Jesus of Nazareth, which was based on a journey to Palestine in 1901, where Hole had spent some weeks 'with paints and a Kodak camera, recording the places and people to create authentic settings and costumes for a series of illustrations of the life of Christ' (ODNB). Hole's attention to historical accuracy was such that he collected traditional Palestinian costumes to use for reference, acting on the advice of David Whiting, a missionary with a particular interest in Palestinian costume. The Life of Jesus of Nazareth was so successful that the publisher, Eyre and Spottiswoode, suggested a companion volume of Old Testament scenes: Hole agreed, and in 1912 travelled to Egypt and Palestine to collect material for the volume. By 1916 he had completed over seventy watercolours, and his accompanying commentary was under way. Hole died in 1917, having done much to establish the image of the Biblical past in the British popular imagination. ~Robust packaging. All UK orders trackable, others on request.
