From the Author
Thanks for looking in on the culmination of my more than fifteen years of research and work on the history and culture of Old Roses! While my previous book "The Old Rose Advisor" focuses on the repeat-blooming old roses (Bourbons, Hybrid Perpetuals, Teas, Chinas, etc.), this new book, "The Old Rose Adventurer" covers the rest of the old roses, including the delightful traditional European groups (such as Centifolias, Mosses, Damasks, Gallicas, Albas, Foetidas, Pimpinellifolias, etc., etc.), other shrub roses (such as Rugosas, Roxburghiis, Hybrid Musks, Eglantines, Setigeras, Lambertianas, etc.), once-blooming climbers and ramblers (such as Sempervirenses, Wichuraianas, Multifloras, etc.), and has as well chapters on the repeat-blooming Hybrid Teas of 1900-1920 and Pernetianas of 1900-1930 (and their climbing sports). These are complete chapters, with entries for *all* available, important, or otherwise interesting cultivars. As before with the previous book, this is the result of original research--not mere copying of other modern books--resulting in more data, correct introduction dates, correct names of roses and of introducers, and correct descriptions from diverse rosarians contemporary with the early years of the roses mentioned--often the very words of the proud introducers themselves! This diversity is very important to the reader, as--in opposition to the usual books on roses--it provides information from and pertaining to many climates, tastes, and growing conditions, making it truly of service to all needs. In addition, historical notes, related matter of interest, and full appendices (including an appendix updating the chapters in my previous book) and indexing are included such that the reader will have the full benefit of the expertise of the past as well as the perspective of the present. Information presented for the first time in the previous book, "The Old Rose Advisor", and formerly not available elsewhere in print has been found so accurate and sound that it has entered the mainstream and is proving of great use to current researchers and authors, as well as to those careful, appreciative gardeners who grow the beautiful, fragrant roses of the past in the choice gardens of today. The high standards and wide-ranging collection of data pursued in the writing of that work have been set to work once again in this next work, "The Old Rose Adventurer." Join me for a refreshing and eye-opening walk through History's rosarium as together we harvest the blossoms from centuries of rose progress!
