Item description from seller

First British edition, 1893. Pictorial board in blue linen with even rubbing and wear. Somewhat musty from the book's time in southern climes. Rare first book of the "White Voodoo" American folklorist, Mary Alicia Ownen. Inspired by Charles Leland's Algonquin Legends, and recognizing their similarity to the stories she had heard and collected as a young woman, Owen wrote to Leland, who encouraged her to put down the stories and 'conjuring' traditions with which she had grown up. Subject Matter: A collection of oral traditions, conjure practices, trickster tales (featuring "Old Rabbit"), omens, and vernacular magic gathered from African American, Indigenous, and rural communities in Missouri and the Ozarks. She was soon invited into the circle of the early American folklorists where she made significant contributions to African American and Native folklores.
