Item description from seller

The Old Man; or Ramblings Round Coniston, Alexander Craig Gibson â" Second Edition, Revised Publication: Windermere, John Garnett; London, Whittaker and Co., 1857 Formatting: 12mo, unpaginated preliminary leaves, complete with frontispiece and publisher's advertisements at the rear. Condition Report: Very Good. The book is bound in early blind-stamped brown publisher's cloth, presenting exceptionally well with only trivial rubbing to the extremities and slight softening to the spine ends. The binding remains firm, square, and remarkably tight, displaying virtually no significant shelf-wear, a testament to its careful preservation. The page block edges exhibit mild, uniform foxing and age-toning typical of the era, which lightly encroaches on the extreme margins of a few leaves. The preliminary pages remain generally bright, bearing neat institutional classification marks in pen, while the front pastedown retains a clean armorial bookplate. The frontispiece is crisp and well-preserved. A very attractive, sturdy copy. Catalogue Note: "Second Edition, Revised" of Alexander Craig Gibson's celebrated topographical work on the Lake District, originally published in 1849 under the slightly extended titleÂThe Old Man; or Ravings and Ramblings Round Coniston. Issued anonymously in this edition, the work is a staple of Cumbrian local history. This 1857 printing by J. Garnett strips the "Ravings" from the title and presents a refined, beautifully written guide to the Coniston area. The volume is illustrated with a charming frontispiece engraving depicting the craggy peaks of the Coniston fells. It bears an attractive institutional provenance, featuring the armorial bookplate of the Lancaster Public Library on the front pastedown. Alexander Craig Gibson (1813â"1874) was a prominent English surgeon, folklorist, and antiquary who practised in the Lake District and contributed significantly to the region's topographical and dialect literature. Early editions of this work remain uncommon on the open market, particularly in such well-preserved original publisher's cloth. A charming mid-Victorian guide to the Lake District, focusing intimately on the rugged landscapes and local lore of Coniston. Written by the respected local surgeon and antiquary Alexander Craig Gibson, The Old Man blends historical topography with evocative descriptions of the Coniston fells. A delightful piece of Cumbrian history, perfect for collectors of Lake District literature and mountaineering topography. …
