In The Old Coyote of Big Sur, Gui de Angulo paints a vivid portrait of her father, Jaime de Angulo (1887–1950). Linguist, novelist, cowboy, rancher, medical doctor, and sorcerer’s apprentice, Jaime was a legend in his own time. The scholars and artists he befriended and influenced, such as Carl Jung, Robinson Jeffers, Marianne Moore, Henry Miller, Harriet Monroe, and D. H. Lawrence, form a Who’s Who of the first half of the 20th century, but because de Angulo’s fame as a linguist outshone his work as a writer, his literary achievements remained unknown. Jaime was a brilliant scholar, and his life among Native Americans—especially the forty years he spent with the Pit River tribe of northern California—shaped an exceptional contribution to American anthropology. Ezra Pound called Jaime the “American Ovid.” Jaime, whose novel The Lariat has been compared with The Scarlet Letter, was also the author of Indian Tales and many other titles, all published posthumously. Gui de Angulo (1927–2019), Jaime’s daughter and biographer, was a photographer and painter and the author of Jaime in The Taos Papers of Jaime de Angulo; A Maharashtra Overland in India; and The Blue Train to A Bad Trip to Egypt.
