Print on Demand. This book explores the urgent need for an Old Age Pension scheme in Great Britain and Ireland. It was crafted in response to a parliamentary committee estimating an exorbitant cost for state pensions in 1901 that was more than double the author's own calculations. The author uses evidence from comparable schemes in other countries, such as Denmark, to posit that the true cost would be far lower than the estimate concluded by the parliamentary committee. The book questions why disabled soldiers and civil servants are entitled to a state pension while laborers are not. It also delves into the themes of poverty, inequality, and the plight of the working class in the late 19th century. The author argues that a state pension is not only a matter of financial security but also a question of social justice, advocating for a system that ensures dignity and security for all citizens in their old age. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
