Lively sheet music for a piano galop celebrating the petroleum craze, composed by Carlo Detta and issued by J. Marsh of Philadelphia in 1865. Published from Marsh s Music Store at 1102 Chestnut Street, the piece trades on the contemporary oil fever that gripped Pennsylvania after the success at Titusville. Distributed regionally through S. T. Gordon in New York and Oliver Ditson & Co. in Boston, it is a spirited survival of musical ephemera tied to the first American oil boom. The title page presents OIL FEVER on a broad banner above GALLOP in shaded display letters, surrounded by pen flourishes and a small six-pointed star device. Carlo Detta appears in gothic lettering, with the engraver s credit Geo. F. Swain at lower left. The imprint lists Marsh at 1102 Chesnut St., with Gordon and Ditson as affiliates. On the first page of music the caption reads The Oil Fever Galop, reflecting period flexibility between gallop and galop. There is a full-page advertisement on the inside wrapper for Marsh s Music Store, which boasts constant publication and receipt of new music and lists songs, schottisches, polkas, waltzes, and marches with prices. The ad promotes instruments and accessories, naming Marsh as sole agent for Haines Brothers pianos, Cheney s tempered reed melodeons, and Tilton s patent sounding-bar guitars. Along the foot of the cover and first page is the copyright notice, entered by J. Marsh in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 1865. The piece neatly illustrates how popular music was marketed in the Civil War era. In 1859 Edwin Drake s well at Titusville sparked a rush along Oil Creek, quickly dubbed oil fever. Publishers echoed the sensation in songs, broadsides, and cartoons. Detta s brisk galop captures the moment when Pennsylvania petroleum entered American popular culture.…
