Issued by O. Ditson & Co., Boston, with a New York agent line for S. T. Gordon. The piece targets investors and parlors alike, promising a jaunty chorus on financial fever. The title page balances restrained black rules and corner ornaments with bold arched capitals for OIL ON THE BRAIN. A short stanza printed inside the arch prefigures the refrain about stocks rising and falling. Song and Chorus and the author s name appear in shaded display types. At foot is Electrotyped by L. Johnson & Co., Philadelphia. The engraved score opens Lively, verses for solo voice with piano, followed by a part-song chorus labeled Air, Alto, Tenor, and Bass that repeats the catchphrase. Ditson was among the nation s dominant music houses, and the imprints here demonstrate a cooperative distribution model. Marsh s densely printed catalogue on the verso lists current dance tunes, ballads, and warhorse waltzes, along with other petroleum titles, evidence of the market for topical novelties. Oil on the Brain is typical of 1864 65 sheet music that sold amusement while registering the hazards of boom-and-bust finance. Its mixed single-song and choral format broadened performance options from home music-making to light theatricals. After Edwin Drake s 1859 well at Titusville ignited the Pennsylvania rush, oil on the brain became a catchphrase for speculative mania.
