The author's name "Sandford" is in ink on the upper left of the title label.; Contains two written pieces. The first is a brief, but detailed essay about the conception and evolution of the Golden Cockerel type, designed by Eric Gill for the Golden Cockerel Press. It was first used in 1931 in the press' book The Hundredth Story by A. E. Coppard. This essay was written by Christopher Sandford, one of the owners of Golden Cockerel Press from 1933 through 1959, and a founding director of Folio Society. The second is John Randle's chatty essay about Will and Sebastian Carter's Rampant Lions Press, a job press that also did fine press book printing. This essay covers an exhibition of Rampant Lions work, a bit of press history, and the numerous types and faces used. Randel pointedly notes that the Press prioritized modern efficiency over strict adherence to older methods. John Randle was the co-proprietor of The Whittington Press, which published this book. This bound copy of two essays is an offprint from Matrix 2, 1982. Matrix was published by The Whittington Press of John and Rosalind Randle. Matrix was an annual compendium of essays and printing samples related to book design, typography, letterpress, and all things related to the book arts. Each issue had the writing or featured the work of many practitioners. Far from being the usual compendium of the arts, Matrix was written by experts, for experts. Paginated 23-26, so 4 pp. On fine woven paper. In stiff, mould made, black paper wraps with paper title label. This 4to sized book is 11" x 7 3/4". Clean and about Near Fine condition.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 4 pages.…
