About this Item

In original black paper cover boards with gilt front cover title, "Edition 1889-90", all edges red. Rare early illustrated guidebook of Yellowstone, 140 pp., including 21 full page woodcut engravings of famous Yellowstone views, features and map of the Upper Geyser Basin, 14 blank pages for "Tourist Memoranda", and large folding printed color entitled "Map of the Yellowstone National Park compiled from Different Official Explorations and Our Personal Survey, 1882" by Hals and Rydstrom in rear pocket. *** Condition: Spine perished and binding very fragile but still holding. Old owner name written in pencil on front endpaper, otherwise text is clean and unmarked. The large map is a little fragile with a few short fold separations, a torn upper left corner (piece still attached) and some crumpling to the left margin at the fold lines. *** OCLC lists the earliest of Riley's Official Guides with a date of 1886, followed by 1887, 1888, and 1889, thus likely making this the fourth edition. The first Hal and Rydstrom's map of Yellowstone appeared earlier in Wingate's 1886 "Through the Yellowstone Park on Horseback". In "Mapping Wyoming" Bruce Blevins calls this map "a signficant private publication." Blevins 459, version one. Bookseller Inventory # 000348
