Item description from seller

Fourth edition, 1794. "Illustrated with an accurate engraving of the manoeuvering and line of battle of the two fleets on that memorable day." The book is quite rare. The large engraving is 11x14 inches, by V. Woodthorpe and dated 1794. The other is a list of the lines of battle of both fleets with the ships names, commanders, numbers killed or wounded and other remarks, 10.5x8.5 inches. Hardcover, bound in full leather gilt titles on the spine. 5.25x8.5 inches, 36 pages. Very good condition. With two bookplates -- one is the bookplate of the Marquess of Sligo (Browne family),whose family seat was Westport in County Mayo, Ireland. Westport is mentioned on the bookplate's crest. The other is the bookplate of William Tarun Fehsenfeld, a Baltimore antiques dealer (1925-1995). The Glorious First of June was the first and largest battle of the French Revolutionary Wars. The British fleet was under the command of Earl Howe. British forces attempted to prevent passage of an American grain ship under French protection. The result of the battle was somewhat unclear, but both sides claimed victory. In any case. Howe was considered one of the best naval commanders of the age.
