Title: The Odysseys of Homer, Translated According to the Greek Author: Homer Translator: George Chapman (1559–1634) Series Editor: Israel Gollancz Publisher: J. M. Dent & Co., Aldine House, London Publication Date: 1907 Edition: Reprinted October 1907 Series: The Temple Classics Binding: Hardcover, original publisher's dark blue cloth Volumes: Two volumes, complete set Condition: Good Dust Jackets: None Description: A complete two-volume early twentieth-century edition of The Odysseys of Homer, translated into English by the Elizabethan poet and dramatist George Chapman, published by J. M. Dent & Co. as part of the celebrated Temple Classics series, edited by Israel Gollancz. Reprinted in October 1907. Chapman's translation of Homer's Odyssey, first published in the early seventeenth century, is regarded as one of the landmark achievements of English Renaissance literature. Renowned for its vigorous language, dramatic intensity and poetic richness, the translation was famously celebrated by John Keats in his sonnet On First Looking into Chapman's Homer. The Odyssey recounts the extraordinary wanderings of Odysseus following the Trojan War, including his encounters with the Cyclops, Circe, the Sirens and other legendary figures, before his eventual return to Ithaca. Both volumes retain their original publisher's dark blue cloth bindings, with decorative gilt lettering and ornamentation to the spines and blind-stamped designs to the front boards. The volumes feature attractive decorative title pages printed in black and red, surrounded by elaborate floral borders characteristic of the Temple Classics series. The original protective tissue guards remain present. The front endpapers display the distinctive Temple Classics series design, commemorating the first publication of George Chapman's translation in 1614–1616. An appealing matched two-volume set, particularly suitable for collectors of classical literature, English Renaissance poetry, early twentieth-century publishing and the Temple Classics series. Condition: Good. Both volumes retain their original dark blue cloth bindings, which display moderate age-related rubbing, scattered surface marks and some fading, particularly to the spines. The gilt spine lettering and decorations remain visible, although somewhat dulled. The corners and spine extremities exhibit wear and minor bumping. The page edges show age-related toning. Internally, the decorative title pages retain their attractive black and red printing, while the protective tissue guards show discolouration and some spotting. The endpapers exhibit occasional foxing and age-related marks. Previous ownership inscriptions and handwritten annotations are present on the preliminary leaves, including the name B. Tomlinson. Some exposed or loose binding threads are visible in the photographs, and the structural condition of the bindings has not been fully established. Overall, a characterful and attractive complete two-volume set retaining its original bindings and decorative features.…
