The book unfolds through the voice of a seasoned hired man who has watched decades of life on the Long farm straddle the United States and Canada. With warmth and plain speech, it follows a community of neighbors, friends, and a family whose hopes, disappointments, and loyalties shape a story that grows richer with time.
Set against fields, fences, and the rhythms of rural life, this edition invites readers to step into the hazy days of late summer and the sharp turns of a town’s fate. It blends everyday tasks with larger questions about law, justice, and the human ties that hold a community together.
- First‑person narration from a steady, practical farmhand who sees more than appears on the surface
- Cross‑border life: American and Canadian perspectives collide around a single fence line
- A sequence of curious, sometimes humorous, events that shape relationships over years
- A reflective, patient tone that builds toward a dramatic turn of events without rushing the motion
Ideal for readers who enjoy character‑driven historical fiction with a rural setting and a steady, observant narrator.
