Print on Demand. This book investigates the errors that arise from atmospheric refraction on radio measurements of range and angular position for systems involving a moving air-borne or space terminal. The author examines the time and spatial statistics of the phase-front of microwave signals sent from a ground terminal to an elevated terminal using a series of mountain top antenna arrays to simulate the elevated phase-front. The book analyzes the phase-front in terms of time variations in radio range on a single path and in first and second range differences from pairs of paths. The text concludes with the author's interpretation of the relationship between variance and time of day or meteorological variables. Readers interested in the statistical structure of the elevated phase-front of a ground-based microwave signal that has been distorted by propagation through the lower layers of the troposphere will find this book of interest. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The site chosen is on the Island of Maui, Hawaii, with propagation paths extending from a point 25 meters above sea level at the abandoned Puunene airport to an array of four antennas approximately 3000 meters above sea level at the summit of Mt. Haleakala. The paths were from 24. 5 to 24. 9 km in length and were tilted at an angle of 7 degrees from the horizontal. A map and terrain profile are shown in figures 2 and 3.
