Nicolaes Tulp (Nicolai Tulpii)

Very rare original antique 1685 copy of Nicolaes Tulp's "Observationes Medica." The book is illustrated with an engraved title page and 20 additional illustrations, including one of a chimpanzee which is considered by many to be the first Western depiction of the animal. It lacks the portrait of Tulp. Aside from the missing portrait the book is overall in very good antiquarian condition with just some minor signs of wear and age. It is bound it its original vellum covers which have some minor wear. The binding is good and sound. The paper of the pastedowns has some areas of splitting near the edges of the vellum. There is some minor notation to the endpapers and an old, small and unobtrusive withdrawn stamp towards the bottom of the back pastedown. The pages are lightly toned with age but generally clean with just some occasional light foxing, soiling, and grubbiness. Along with that there may be the very occasional page with some kind of minor imperfection such as a small marginal tear or minor chip, creased page corner, minor stain, etc. Generally though, it's a nice copy. The book measures approximately 6 5/8 inches by 4 1/8 inches and is 382 pages long. The text is in Latin. Seller Inventory # 305693020343
