About this Item

Description:

147pp. Publisher's olive green blindstamped cloth, spine and front board gilt. Moderate wear, rubbing, and some soiling to binding, corners bumped and worn. A few corners dogeared. Foxing, tanning, and light soiling throughout. Ownership inscription in pencil on front free endpaper. Good. Armstrong served for three years as a government surveyor in the Pacific Northwest. His extensive travels form the basis for his minute descriptions of the geography, Indian life, and prospects for the territory. Virtually all of his travels were on the west side of the Cascades in Oregon, especially the Willamette Valley. His account of the country proceeds topographically, moving from settlement to settlement in his narrative, with anecdotes of his travels. He also describes the Indian tribes of the coast in the second half of the book, evidently based on his experience as an "active participant" in the Indian wars in Oregon. "One chapter only is given to Eastern Chinook Jargon and the Nootka dialect" - Wagner-Camp. "An excellent account of Oregon" - Streeter. HOWES A318, "aa." TWENEY 89, 3. GRAFF 87. WAGNER-CAMP 283a. STREETER SALE 3330. CHICAGO ANTE-FIRE IMPRINTS 229. REESE, BEST OF THE WEST 142. Seller Inventory # WRCAM55960
