[Tokyo 1885, Kobunsha]. Color woodblock-printed covers on plain Washi paper, 12.2 x 18 cm., [18]p., 22 illustrations, covers bit dusty,mild front cover stain, old mend worm holes at top margin, else clean & solid.2nd printing.FIRST EDITION . *** **** *** . . . COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINTED . . . RARE FIRST EDITION, 2nd PRINTING PRINTED ON PLAIN PAPER . . * A marvelous children's fairy tale, written by David Thompson, telling and illustrating the story, great for children of all ages ! Thompson apparently found an old Japanese edition and then translated it into English. . *** A classic fairy tale from Japan's rich pantheon of ancient "Otogi-banashi" [traditional "Japanese Folk-Tales"]. . Beautifully color illustrated woodblock front & back covers, all other illustrations are in black outline. Color illustrated texts began later from Hasegawa publishers. . *** RARE FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING: . The RARE "JAPANESE FAIRY TALE SERIES," Was begun on August 17, 1885, by Kobunsha publishers, text entirely in English. . Number 4 of the series was published by Kobunsha, at No. 2, Minami Saegicho, [Kyobashi-ku], Tokyo. This copy is the earliest known, issued in a plain Washi [handmade mulberry fiber] paper. . This book has color woodblock printed front & back covers. It contains [9] double-folded leaves, with 20 single-page & 2 double-page black outline illustrations & English texts, 18 pages in all including the covers. . Inside the front cover is the colophon in Romaji & Japanese. It reads published August17, 1885, [first] reprint October [no day cited], October 1885, therefore FIRST PRINTING, second edition. . The "JAPANESE FAIRY TALE SERIES" continued to be published by the above two names from no. 1-18. From number of the series 20 onwards, Hasegawa's name appears after the two above publisher's names at his first address, "10 Hiyoshi-Cho, Kyobashi-ku, Tokyo." Hasegawa was granted permission to publish and distribute these titles. See Sharf p.60. . *** THE TWO VARIANTS: . This title was issued in two variants: the FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE on plain Washi paper and later in the crepe paper edition, completely color woodblock illustrated. The art work is identical, illustrated by celebrated Japanese artist/painter: Sensei Eitaku. The texts of all in the series issued in English. . *** HASEGAWA EDITION: After August 17, 1885, [between 1885-1889], Hasegawa began to use the above address indicating his purchase [take over] of Kobunhsa or by their permission, Hasegawa began printing those titles owned by Kobunsha, publishing under Hasegawa's own name. Sometime later, this title showing a second publisher, Komiya Sojiro.at 152 Oshiage-Cho, Hongo-ku, Tokyo. . Hasegawa also published this same title showing the same date in a full color illustrated & crepe paper edition. . Although the colophon shows August 17, 1885 [Meiji 18th year]. This of course was actually published after that date, being that this date indicated the date 'permission' was granted by Kobunsha to Hasegawa to 'reprint & distribute,' not the actual publication his publication, which is now 'lost.' . *** STORY OUTLINE: When a dog began scratching at a certain spot, a kind-hearted old man, the master of the dog, dug there and found a quantity of gold. A neighboring greedy old couple borrowed the dog, which began scratching at another spot. But when they dug there, all they found was a lot of filthy stuff. In a fit of anger, the greedy old man killed the dog and buried it beside a tree. In his grief, the kind old man cut down the tree and made a mortar out of the wood. When he used the mortar to pound barley, the barley multiplied. Hearing of this, the greedy old man again borrowed the mortar, but the barley he pounded split apart. In another fit of anger, he broke the mortar to pieces and burned the pieces as fire wood. The kind old man scattered the ashes from the mortar, and the ashes made dead trees blossom. The prince of the country saw this and plentifully rewarded him.

You have the right to cancel this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The cancellation period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right to cancel, you must inform us, RARE ORIENTAL BOOK CO., ABAA, ILAB, P.O. Box 1599, 95001-1599, Aptos, California, U.S.A., of your decision to cancel this contract by a clear statement (e.g. a letter sent by post, fax or e-mail no telephone messages or calls accepted). You may use the attached model cancellation form, but it is not obligatory. You can also electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". If you use this option, we will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a cancellation on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the cancellation deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right to cancel before the cancellation period has expired.
Effects of cancellation
If you cancel this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to cancel with contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall carefully re-wrap the item in its original packing, protect from transit damage, insure, signature required at your expense, send to us at:

Books returned damaged, not in the condition sent to you will not be subject to return.

Otherwise without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your cancellation from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
