A comprehensive clinical guide to the principles, techniques, and challenges of obstetric anesthesia—from maternal physiology and labor analgesia to cesarean delivery, hemorrhage, emergencies, and high-risk maternal care.
Pregnancy produces profound physiologic changes that influence nearly every aspect of anesthetic practice. Understanding these changes is essential when caring for patients during labor, delivery, cesarean birth, and unexpected obstetric emergencies.
Obstetric Anesthesia in Modern Clinical Practice brings together the foundational concepts and major clinical considerations needed to understand contemporary obstetric anesthesia in a structured, practical format.
Inside, readers will explore:
-
Maternal physiology and anesthetic implications, including cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurologic, renal, hematologic, and metabolic adaptations
-
Uteroplacental and fetal physiology, including placental drug transfer, fetal oxygenation, acid–base considerations, and fetal and neonatal effects of maternal anesthetic exposure
-
Pre-anesthetic assessment and patient safety, including airway evaluation, laboratory and coagulation assessment, planning, consent, communication, and team preparation
-
Obstetric anesthesia pharmacology, covering local anesthetics, opioids, adjuvants, pharmacokinetic changes, and local anesthetic systemic toxicity
-
Labor analgesia and epidural management, including clinical planning, troubleshooting, catheter failure, and complications
-
Spinal and combined spinal–epidural anesthesia, with attention to technique, block height, patient selection, and management of high or total spinal anesthesia
-
Cesarean delivery anesthesia, including anesthetic technique selection, spinal anesthesia, hypotension, nausea, shivering, and inadequate anesthesia
-
General anesthesia and obstetric airway management, including aspiration risk, rapid airway management, difficult intubation, failed intubation, emergence, and respiratory concerns
-
Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, including preeclampsia, magnesium therapy, eclampsia, and HELLP syndrome
-
Obstetric hemorrhage and massive transfusion, including uterine atony, placental disorders, coagulopathy, physiologic resuscitation, and placenta accreta spectrum
-
High-risk maternal conditions, including cardiac disease, respiratory disease, asthma, obesity, renal disease, neurologic disease, endocrine disorders, and other systemic conditions
-
Obstetric emergencies and maternal collapse, including amniotic fluid embolism, cardiac arrest in pregnancy, high neuraxial block, and local anesthetic toxicity
-
Maternal sepsis, thrombosis, and critical illness, including septic shock, anticoagulation, intensive care considerations, infection control, neuraxial safety, and postoperative surveillance
Rather than treating these subjects as isolated topics, this book connects maternal physiology, pharmacology, anesthetic technique, patient assessment, complication recognition, and emergency management to provide a coherent view of obstetric anesthetic care.
Whether used for structured study, clinical reference, or review of fundamental concepts, Obstetric Anesthesia in Modern Clinical Practice provides a broad educational overview of the considerations that shape anesthetic management throughout the obstetric journey.
A focused resource for understanding the science, techniques, complications, and high-risk situations encountered in modern obstetric anesthesia.
