About the Author
Patricia W. Iyer, MSN, RN, LNCC is one of the editors of this text and wrote or coauthored 12 chapters: Roots of Patient Injury, Where Have all the Nurses Gone? Medical Errors: Roots of Litigation, Foundations of Nursing Practice, Pain and Suffering, Nursing Documentation, Patient Safety Initiatives, Subacute and Long-term Care Nursing Malpractice, Demonstrative Evidence, Working with Legal Nurse Consultants, Working with Nursing Expert Witnesses, and Medication Errors. Ms. Iyer's experience as an author and editor began in 1980. She has written, coauthored, or edited over 125 articles, chapters, textbooks, case studies, and online courses. Prior to this text, her most recent editorial involvement was serving as the co-editor, with Barbara Levin, of Medical Legal Aspects of Medical Records. She is the chief editor of Principles and Practices of Legal Nurse Consulting, Second Edition (2003) the core curriculum of legal nurse consulting and Business Principles for Legal Nurse Consultants (2005). Most recently, she completed an online course for Sigma Theta Tau directed to legal issues for the new nurse.Ms. Iyer is a frequent lecturer to attorneys, paralegals, nurses, and legal nurse consultants. She has appeared several times on Law Journal TV and on American Airlines inflight entertainment radio programming as part of a program on the nursing shortage. After entering the field of legal nurse consulting as a medical surgical expert witness in 1987, in 1989, she established Med League Support Services, Inc., an independent legal nurse consulting firm. Ms. Iyer has served on the national board of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants in the role of secretary, director at large, president elect, president, and past president. She served two years as the chair of the AALNC Education Committee, during which time she was the chief editor of the AALNC online legal nurse consulting course. AALNC awarded Ms. Iyer with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 and the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2006. Certified by the American Association of Legal Nurse Consulting as a Legal Nurse Consultant Certified (LNCC), Ms. Iyer began her nursing career by earning a diploma in nursing from Muhlenberg Hospital School of Nursing in Plainfield, New Jersey. She earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing and a master of science degree in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Levin, BSN, RN, ONC, LNCC co-authored and updated the Orthopaedic Malpractice chapter and coauthored a new chapter: Falls and Their Consequences. Ms. Levin was a co-editor of Medical Legal Aspects of Medical Records, Second Edition (2010) and co-authored the chapter Orthopaedic Records. In addition, she was an associate editor of Principles and Practices of Legal Nurse Consulting, Second Edition. Ms. Levin is a certified orthopaedic nurse and has received recognition as a Clinical Scholar at Massachusetts General Hospital where she works in the orthopedic trauma unit. Her dedication to orthopaedics has inspired her to co-author the chapter Orthopaedic Complications for the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses Core Curriculum. Ms. Levin is an accomplished NAON instructor who teaches review classes to nurses in preparation for the ONC (orthopaedic nurses' certification) exam. She earned the distinction of Legal Nurse Consultant Certified and served as president of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (2004-2005). She participated with the American Nurses Association to define and publish Legal Nurse Consulting: Scope and Standards of Practice. During Ms. Levin's term on the AALNC Board of Directors, she assisted in the development of the position statement The Specialty Practice of Legal Nurse Consulting. She also received the prestigious 2006 Partners in Excellence award for exemplary performance in Outstanding Community Contributions. In 2007, Ms. Levin received the AALNC Member of the Year award. Ms. Levin draws on a wealth of nursing experience in a myriad of clinical settings. She has published and lectured to nurses nationwide about patient safety, orthopaedics, and documentation practices. Assisting facilities in redesigning key policies and procedures, Ms. Levin has improved patient safety and reporting of such incidents. Ms. Levin serves as a valued member of the Massachusetts Tribunal, working together with a judge and an attorney to determine the direction of medical malpractice claims. In her role as a legal nurse consultant, she educates at court mediations and has been an appreciated asset during these appearances. Ms. Levin and Ms. Iyer have collaborated on many projects which include teaching two programs to the International Council of Nurses, 2007 conference, in Yokohama, Japan. Additionally they have given presentations to nurses, physicians, medical students, nursing students and attorneys nationally.
