Synopsis: Selected and edited with a preface by David Hill. This new two-volume collection of short anthems for the Novello Choral Programme represents some five hundred years of church music, from works by Gibbons and Tallis through to contemporary compositions by such leading figures as Barry Rose and Philip Ledger. Mozart's "Ave verum Corpus", Bruckner's "Locus iste" and Walford Davies's "God be in my head" represent familiar works long-established in the British church choral repertory; here they are complemented by the inclusion of lesser-known and more recent works such as Douglas Guest's "For the fallen" and Ralph Allwood's "Blessing". Many of the pieces are ideal as Introits and Anthems for general church use and others match particular services in the liturgical calendar, but all are suited to both devotional and concert performance. The works here are short, around three minutes or less, but range from the technically straightforward to the more exacting; some are in four-part layout, while others have divided voices and solos. Taken together, the selection allows for choices to suit the capabilities of an individual choir, while presenting challenges in the range of interpretational styles required by the performers and variety for the listening congregation or audience.
