About this Item
Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 14.75" x 18.75". This rare and early 1630 map of the Chesapeake Bay and the Virginia Colony, originally derived from John Smith's 1612 map, was created by Willem Blaeu in 1630. Oriented with north to the right, it covers the Chesapeake Bay from Cape Henry to the Susquehanna River, depicting settlements, geographical features, and Smith's exploration limits. Settlements are marked with a house and the parameters of Smith's explorations are marked with a cross. Denotes many place names including Jamestown and geographical and topographical elements. Features architectural cartouches, a coat of arms, and and illustrations of a Sasquesahanough Indian. An elaborate vignette showing the Powhatan King surrounded by his subjects in an early depiction of a Native American Longhouse is included in the top left. This map is considered one of the most important maps of America, influencing European perceptions and maps for generations. Initially engraved by Jodocus Hondius in 1618, the map's plates were acquired by Blaeu after Hondius's death in 1629, leading to competing editions by Blaeu and the Hondius firms. The map was significant in illustrating the strategic and economic potential of the Virginia colony, particularly its hoped-for connection to the Pacific Ocean via the legendary Sea of Verrazzano. This is the second state of the map, identified by no text on verso, dating this map to 1630. This map is in good condition with minor overall toning. Minor wear along centerfold. Lined on verso with restoration tissue for stability. Wide borders. Willem Blaeu (1571-1638) was a prolific Dutch mapmaker who started one of the most famous map publishing firms of the 17th century. It was at this time that the Dutch controlled the map trade, and their ornate and beautiful maps had immense popularity. Blaeu was instrumental in driving this dominance in his lifetime, and this legacy was continued by his sons. Burden 193. Seller Inventory # 322858
