Item description from seller

Publication: London, Faber and Faber Limited for The Shenval Press, 1947 Formatting: 12mo, pp. 72. Condition Report: Very Good. The original green cloth binding remains structurally sound and pleasingly tight, though it exhibits some mild sunning and age-related darkening, particularly across the spine and extremities. The corners are gently bumped with fractional rubbing, consistent with modest shelf-life. Internally, the text block is commendably bright and crisp, with the wood engravings remaining sharp and deeply inked. Aside from very faint, occasional toning to the extreme margins and mild browning to the endpapers, the pages are free from heavy foxing, tears, or prior ownership inscriptions. An attractive, well-preserved copy lacking the dust jacket. Catalogue Note: This is a 1947 second impression (reprinted following the 1946 true first edition) of Robert Harling's seminal monograph, issued as part of the esteemed 'Ariel Books on the Arts' series under the general editorship of Lillian Browse. Profusely illustrated throughout, the volume stands as an important early celebration of Eric Ravilious's masterful wood engravings, collating his distinctive designs shortly after his tragic death during the Second World War. The book is bound in its original cloth boards and retains the publisher's charming vignette to the title page. While the 1946 first edition commands a high premium on the modern market, this immediate post-war reprint remains uncommonly encountered, especially with such a clean interior, appealing directly to collectors of the Ariel series and mid-century British graphic art enthusiasts alike. Robert Harling’s Notes on the Wood-Engravings of Eric Ravilious offers an intimate and expertly curated look into the work of one of Britain’s most celebrated graphic artists. As a close associate who frequently commissioned Ravilious, Harling pairs striking black-and-white reproductions with insightful commentary on the artist's distinctive style, technique, and creative evolution. This touching tribute captures the charm, precision, and enduring legacy of Ravilious’s wood engravings, serving as an essential reference for lovers of twentieth-century British art and design.…
