Print on Demand. Discover the fascinating origins and meanings of Wiltshire place names. Travel through this book to discover how villages, towns, and landmarks in south-western England received their names. Ancient words from the Keltic, Roman, Saxon, and Scandinavian languages are explored in depth, revealing a complex history of human settlement in the region. The author uncovers how our place names tell the stories of the people who lived here, from the earliest Keltic tribes to conquering invaders and later settlers. As the book examines the various suffixes and prefixes found in Wiltshire's place names, it uncovers the rich tapestry of the county's past. Delve into the meaning behind "ton," "ham," "leigh," and "bury," and learn how these words reveal the nature of Wiltshire's settlements. The author's exploration of the linguistic heritage of Wiltshire is both informative and engaging, providing a unique lens through which to understand the county's history and culture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
