This series by Mr. Johnson represents a significant contribution to the theory and practice of building self esteem among young African American males. He has developed a unique and effective technique for utilizing a biblical orientation as a foundation for building self esteem among this much neglected group. The book presents biblically based readings and exercises that have been shown to be effective in helping these young men view themselves as loved and important because they are not only precious human beings but also spiritual beings. Isaac A. Robinson MSW, Ed.D Retired Chairman and Professor Emeritus Department of Social Work North Carolina Central University *************** "Not a ROACH but a Warrior" is an amazing master work, written and created with the ability to reach the one who everybody seems to overlook. It is written with simple language and with such clarity. When the spirit of a man is broken, he has nothing left. "Not a ROACH but a Warrior" is an empowering message that will lift the broken hearted and restores newness. Martina Dunford, Head of School New Horizons Academy of Excellence ************* This workbook works! Granvel has been able to implement these principles both as a teacher and as a Real Men discipleship leader in our after-school program. I am extremely grateful for the fruit in our young men's lives due to his mentorship. Our young men listen to his critical biblical message about our true identity in Christ for two main reasons: because Granvel's personal witness speaks loudly and clearly to the importance of a life lived in right relationship with God our Father and Savior, and because Granvel knows how to provoke a paradigm shift in young people by breaking things down to make them understandable and accessible.
