Notes on the Parables of Our Lord – Richard Chenevix Trench – 1882 – Fourteenth Edition Revised – Victorian Leather Prize Binding Author: Richard Chenevix Trench, D.D. (1807–1886) Publisher: Macmillan and Co., London Publication Date: 1882 Edition: Fourteenth Edition, Revised Binding: Hardcover, decorative Victorian brown leather prize binding Condition: Good Book Description An attractive nineteenth-century edition of Notes on the Parables of Our Lord by Richard Chenevix Trench, D.D., Archbishop of Dublin and Chancellor of the Order of St Patrick. Published by Macmillan and Co., London, in 1882, this is the Fourteenth Edition, revised, of one of the most influential Victorian commentaries on the parables of Christ. First published in 1841, Trench's celebrated work provides a detailed examination of the parables recorded in the Gospels, combining theological scholarship, historical interpretation and linguistic analysis. The book became a standard reference work within Anglican theological literature and remains of interest to students of nineteenth-century biblical interpretation. The volume is particularly appealing for its handsome Victorian prize binding, featuring brown leather boards decorated with elaborate blind-stamped architectural and geometric designs, together with a gilt school crest to the front board. The spine has raised bands, gilt decorative ornaments and a contrasting leather title label bearing the words "Trench on the Parables". Internally, the volume retains attractive red marbled endpapers and a period school prize label bearing the crest of Godolphin School, Hammersmith, providing an interesting element of educational provenance. Condition: Good, with particularly well-preserved internal condition and structural integrity. The original leather binding displays general age-related rubbing, scuffing and surface wear, most noticeable along the spine, board edges and corners. Nevertheless, the decorative blind-stamping remains clearly defined, while the gilt lettering and ornamentation retain their attractive appearance. Importantly, the binding is exceptionally firm and the text block is tight and securely held, with no evidence of looseness. Internally, the pages are clean and well preserved, with no evidence of foxing. The marbled endpapers remain particularly attractive, and the original school prize label adds historical interest. A handsome and structurally sound example of Victorian theological publishing, combining an important work of biblical scholarship with a distinctive nineteenth-century prize binding. Of particular appeal to collectors of Victorian religious literature, Anglican theology, decorative leather bindings, school prize books and nineteenth-century ecclesiastical history.…
