From the Author:
a book about birds AND people
Dear Readers, This book has been an 8-year-long journey into the lives of some of the most dedicated people I know. They work tirelessly and without asking for recognition, to save the rare birds and ecosystem of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. What's unique about this book is that it's not just about birds, it's also about people, and their relationships with birds. This is my soul book -- I want to share all the wonderful work people do to help the environment. It's also somewhat of an activist book, a plea to help preserve the UP, one of the Midwest's last wilderness. When I went to the UP for the first time years ago, my life was inextricably changed; I hope yours will be, too, as you read this book -- and that you will venture to the UP to meet some of the people I've introduced and to see some of the birds I've discussed. Please feel free to Email me with your thoughts. There are many more people doing work in the UP -- and I might just write a sequel. Best wishes to all my birding and environmental friends, Sheryl De Vore sdevore@ais.net
