Authoritative Cold War-era reference work prepared under the Foreign Area Studies program for the U.S. Department of the Army. Originally researched in 1981 and subsequently updated through later printings, this volume provides a detailed survey of North Korea's history, government, political ideology, economy, military organization, geography, culture, education, and foreign relations. The work includes maps, photographs, organizational charts, statistical data, bibliography, and index. As part of the well-regarded Area Handbook Series, it was designed to provide policymakers, military personnel, researchers, and students with a comprehensive overview of a strategically important but often inaccessible nation. Today these volumes are increasingly collected by Cold War historians, Korea specialists, military history enthusiasts, and researchers interested in contemporary assessments of the DPRK. Cover illustration prepared by Deborah A. Clement, Foreign Are Studies, American University. Condition: Book grades Very Good+. Glossy white laminated boards remain bright and attractive with minor shelf wear, light rubbing, a few faint marks to the rear cover, and mild bumping at corners. Binding is tight and square. Interior is exceptionally clean with no writing, highlighting, bookplates, or library markings with the exception of red and blue ink on the front interior boards. Pages are bright and appear unread or lightly handled. A small pale green smudge is visible on the front cover but is unobtrusive. Overall a clean, collectible example. The copyright page explicitly states Third Edition, Second Printing, 1987. Research for the edition was completed in February 1981, with copyright held by the United States Government as represented by the Secretary of the Army. This is the desirable later printing of the third edition rather than the 1981 first printing. Frederica M. Bunge (1910-1994) was a noted editor and researcher associated with the Foreign Area Studies program at The American University. She oversaw numerous country-study and area-handbook volumes that became standard reference works for government agencies, academics, military personnel, and international affairs researchers during the Cold War era.…
