Educational chart in the style of a wall map, varnished and linen-backed. Fair to good condition, with a light stain and tears and chipping at some edges, with small areas of loss at bottom left corner and along the top left side. Aside from those very small losses, the chart is completely legible. The chart features prominently the sounds made in English language pronunciation. It was designed for use in the multi-age classrooms of the mid-19th century. An article on the importance of this piece was written by Rose-Marie Weber for the Fall, 1994 issue of the History of Reading News (Vol. XVIII, No. 1) A very rare surviving copy of a notable piece in the development of American education.
