Synopsis:

This is the only book at this level to embrace a universal approach to three major developments in classical physics, namely nonlinear waves, solitons and chaos. A comprehensive treatment of instabilities is followed by a study of the nonlinear structures arising from them. Examples of these are coherent entities like nonlinear waves and solitons, as well as the incoherent structures associated with chaos. The first part of the book is a self-contained introduction to general topics associated with nonlinear physics, and would be accessible to final-year undergraduates and beginning postgraduate students. The remainder of the book, for example the treatment of cylindrical solitons, is more advanced and will have a wide appeal to specialists in a number of branches of physics. Each chapter concludes with a set of problems. This very topical text could be used by students taking courses in nonlinear aspects of physics. In general, it will be of value to final-year undergraduates and beginning graduate students studying fluid dynamics, plasma physics and applied mathematics.

Review: "Infeld and Rowlands have produced a well-written monograph on nonlinear wave physics....The physical phenomena discussed in the book are well illustrated by many graphs and figures. The authors have also done an admirable job in collecting more than 20 pages of relevant references. In summary, a good book for anyone wishing to learn about modern developments in nonlinear wave physics." Choice "Overall, Nonlinear Waves, Solitons, and Chaos is a good book. The reviewer likes the style and would especially recommend it to graduate students and theoretically minded scientists in other areas, for it will convey to them some of the excitement of classical physics. It presents as clear an introduction to nonlinear waves and solitons as one may find." Applied Mechanics Review ."..highly recommended as a brief introduction to these important developments in classical physics." Physics in Canada ."..an important contribution to the study of nonlinear waves in that it is a comprehensive summary of the entire area from integrable systems through chaos." David J. Kaup, Mathematical Reviews
