About the book >.>.> The Nineteenth Century, Volume Seven of the Routledge History of Philosophy series, presents an in-depth exploration of a pivotal era marked by significant advancements in various intellectual domains, including the sciences, mathematics, and psychology. This volume highlights the emergence of psychology as a distinct discipline, separate from philosophy, during a time of vigorous philosophical inquiry. Key debates centre around the nature of scientific methodology and the applicability of empirical methods to the study of human behaviour and society.Within its pages, The Nineteenth Century delves into the development and impact of diverse philosophical theories regarding reality, knowledge, morality, and individual freedom?many of which continue to resonate in modern political discussions. The text examines contributions from both analytic and continental philosophical traditions, as well as the notable American Pragmatists, offering a comprehensive overview of the period?s intellectual landscape. The contents are rich and varied, featuring influential figures and schools of thought, including Early Utilitarians, logic and philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of biology, and the works of philosophers such as John Stuart Mill, Friedrich Nietzsche, and William James. The volume also addresses the contributions of notable scholars like Peirce, Comte, Sidgwick, Dilthey, Green, and Bosanquet. The list of contributors includes a distinguished array of contemporary philosophers, ensuring a broad and insightful perspective on the themes discussed.By capturing the essence of nineteenth-century thought, this volume serves as an essential resource for academic libraries and scholars seeking to understand the foundations of modern philosophical discourse, as well as the ongoing relevance of these debates in current intellectual contexts.
