Rinser, Luise, 1911-2002. Nina. Mitte des Lebens. Abenteuer der Tugend. Stuttgart, Hamburg: Deutscher Bücherbund, 1957, 507pp., faded and lightly soiled blue cloth, binding solid, text clean, good copy, previous owner's gift inscription dated Weihnachten 1964. Hugely successful novel. The first part appeared in 1950, the second part in 1957. Struggles of a woman with marriage, intellect, independence, and faith, presented in her letters and diary entries. Rinser is a forgotten popular novelist, but a subject of discussion for her political and moral stances during the 1930s, in post-war Catholic reform, anti-military movements, and German politics. Critics who like her praise the first novel, less so the second part with its Catholic solutions. A third novel in the series was highly criticized.
