Contains a hundred pages, in dates sequence, of cuttings from newspapers and journals dating from 1886 to 1908. Book size - c. 11.5 x 9 iinches, pp 24 (blank alphabetical index pages) + 152, hardback in publisher's binding. Book condition - Good plus ; paste downs and ttile page somewhat dusty, index pages clean, cuttings pages are a bit tanned and show cockling with very occasional small patches of damp staining on the top edge, occasional ink or pencil inscriptions (mostly dates of cuttings), one page loose, binding is sound, pasted inside the back cover is a full page map of Stanley's route for the Relief of Emin Pasha, also loosely inserted are an extract from Macmillan's journal (1862) "The Hand of Man in Kirkdale Cavern", and " A Visit to Marston Moor 1862 " ; publisher's brown cloth with decorated front board (please see photo ) and the title in black on the spine, bevelled boards ; corners with some wear and slightly bent, board edges intact, back with some minor marks but nothing disfiguring, spine complete with ends quite well rubbed with a couple of splits, hinges intact, front with slight surface wear but overall in very good condition with clear and bright title and illustration. Please the photos for indications of condition and content. This book contains an array of cuttings from the 'quality ' end of the press (mostly The Times ) in the late Victorian to Edwardian period. The owner of the book (and 'editor' of the cuttings) is not stated, and the coverage of subjects is varied ; a few examples - unveiling the bust of Samuel Taylor Coleridge in Westminster Abbey, Imperial Federation, UK Foreign Trade in 1884, Modern Views of Elecricity, The Representation of Kidderminster, The India Census, The Recent Discovery at Thebes, Mr Stanley in Egypt . There are also occasional sections of cuttings of poetry, some with engraving illustrations, eg Praeds Enigmas. An unusual and uncommon collection housed in a sound volume of the period.
