Item description from seller

A fine, fresh copy, in equal condition dust jacket. Fourth Printing. 159 pp. Profusely illustrated with photographs. Vintage photos, interviews and archival materials tell the story of Newark, New Jersey's remarkable neighborhood, the old First Ward. It was once the heart of nation's fifth largest Italian community, a quintessential ethnic enclave that enlivened America's cities early in the 20th century. In its heyday, everyone from movie stars to Thomas Edison to Joe DiMaggio came to visit, dine at the restaurants or attend the colorful religious festivals. The author traces the history of the First Ward from the arrival of the first Italians in the 1870s until 1953, when the neighborhood was uprooted to make way for urban renewal.
