Gone are the days of smothering the surfaces of our home with pattern. The emphasis in The New Stencil Book is on an understated approach, using fresh, stylish stencil designs to highlight a feature or subtly enhance a room. In this collection there are over 40 stencil motifs, all capturing the spirit of simple contemporary style.
Throughout the home and in outdoor spaces, ideas are put into practice on a range of surfaces from walls, tiles and floors to fabric, furniture, mirrors and glass. To give maximum choice, each motif is shown first in the setting for which it was designed and then applied to other surfaces and accessories - at a new scale, or in different colors, or as a detail from the original.
In her accessible approach, Simone Smart records her inspirations and design decisions - from first looking at the space available to dealing with the technical challenges - and provides all beginners with enthusiasm, encouragement and advice; and experienced stencillers with new ideas and fresh motivation.
Simone Smart has developed a range of stenciled giftware which she sells through mail order, at her shop in Wilton, Wiltshire and through a gallery in 5th Avenue, New York. Her commissions for private clients are extensive and are in addition to her work for V and A Enterprises (giftware for the Victoria and Albert Museum, London). She runs regular stencil workshops, focusing on designing, cutting and spray stenciling.
Pia Tryde is amongst the most talented and versatile of today's photographers and her photography is recognizable by the freshness of her approach. Her use of natural light brings out the truest colors in her subject matter and her shots have an honesty about them that comes from their clean unclutteredness. Her recent work includes pictures for "Julia Bird's Soft Furnishings" and "New Swedish Style" by Sasha Waddell.
