New Guinea journal, October 2, 1961 to August 4, 1962 is a typed field journal by Nobel laureate D. Carleton Gajdusek (1923–2008), chronicling his medical-ethnographic expedition to the highlands of New Guinea. It was published in 1968 by the Study of Child Growth and Development and Disease Patterns in Primitive Cultures, National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness, Bethesda, Md., and is written in English under the subject heading Tropical Medicine. • The manuscript is held in the D. Carleton Gajdusek Papers (NLM History of Medicine Division) and the Online Archive of California (Box 11, Folder 2), part of his Series 10 "Journals." • It documents his ongoing research on kuru, the fatal spongiform brain disease among the Fore and Kukukuku peoples, which earned Gajdusek the 1976 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. This Journal is in excellent condition, it has no wear, damage or blemishes and it has been dedicated to Joshua Lederberg by Dr Gajdusek with a handwritten inscription - see photos.…
