Item description from seller

A very scarce pamphlet arguing against John Stuart Mill's objections to a secret ballot, by George Jacob Holyoake. A very scarce work.An interesting pamphlet on politics by George Jacob Holyoake. In this work, Holyoake attacks John Stuart Mill's objections to a secret ballot, which he had raised in his 1861 work 'Considerations on Representative Government'. Mill argues that secrecy in voting should be the exception, rather than the rule. Holyoake objects to this in a comprehensive manner, which came on the eve of the passing of the Second Reform Act, which expanded voting rights to working class men.The fifth thousand, published in the same year as the first.Holyoake was a secularist, co-operator, and newspaper editor, who coined the terms 'secularism' and 'jingoism'. Rebound in modern paper covered boards. Externally, smart. A few light marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean. Text is a little closely trimmed to the fore edges, resulting in marginal loss. Very Good Indeed.
