Item description from seller

Three important Alexander Hogg engravings of New South Wales, in a disbound chapter, complete in itself. This is the chapter on Australia with subheadings: 'New Holland' (Australia), 'New South Wales', 'Botany Bay', 'Port Jackson', 'Late Accounts respecting the colony at Port Jackson, as far as Dec. 16, 1791', and 'Norfolk Island'. Includes three important Alexander Hogg copper plate engravings: 1. "A View in Port Jackson, New South Wales", T. Webley sculp, Pub. by Alexr. Hogg May 1, 1793. This engraving was first used to illustrate the title page for 'Journal of a Voyage to New South Wales', by Surgeon General John White, published in London in 1790. It depicts indigenous Australians involved in fishing, with one of the canoes with a fire burning inside on a flat stone, so that fish could be cooked as soon as it was caught. Trove 47997. 2. "Captains Hunter, Collins & Johnston, with Governor Phillip, Surgeon White, & c. Visiting a Distressed Female Native of New South Wales, at a Hut near Port Jackson" (published by Alexr. Hogg). Trove 7890412. 3. "A Man, woman & Children of New South Wales", Drawn from a Sketch taken on the Spot, Goldar, sculp, published by Alexr. Hogg. After the engraving by William Blake in 'An historical journal of the transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island' by John Hunter. Trove 8953998. Disbound section, complete in itself, 4to, pages 9 - 32, with 3 full page b&w plates. A four inch tear at p 19; the third plate detached, slt dusty at edges, o/w very good. We cannot ascertain what this is disbound from, but appears not to be from Bankes or Millar, as it measures only 26.5 cm tall.
