Print on Demand. This book examines Boston's neighborhoods in the 1960s and the problems and needs of its impoverished communities. It is framed by the author's interest in assisting the ABCD in reallocating its funds to combat poverty more effectively. It focuses on the neighborhood known as East Boston, describing its population characteristics and its residents' needs. A key concern is the lack of services and resources for the community, particularly in the areas of health, education, and employment. Statistical data from the 1960 Census is used to analyze the neighborhood's population and their needs. The report discusses existing and planned programs to address these needs and focuses on identifying any overlaps or gaps in services. It also acknowledges the presence of racial and ethnic diversity within the community. Through an examination of the challenges faced by East Boston, this book provides valuable insights into the complexities of urban poverty in mid-century America and the strategies developed to alleviate them. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Not only do Boston's neighborhoods differ from one another in their social aspects but also in the amount and quality of resources which are now being used to meet the needs of their residents. While some neighbor hoods receive relatively satisfactory services in certain problem areas, the services in these areas are clearly inadequate in other neighborhoods. In all the neighborhoods certain significant gaps between needs and resources are apparent and the coordination of various efforts to resolve the problems of the poor is weak and sporadic.
