Print on Demand. This book presents an introduction to the NBS meteor burst propagation project, a comprehensive study of meteors and their potential for communications. The author presents a wealth of data collected from field stations across the United States, exploring the diurnal variation in meteor burst activity, frequency dependence, and the occurrence of meteor bursts. Through detailed analysis of signal characteristics, the book provides insights into the nature of meteor burst signals, duty cycles, and burst rates. The author also discusses the implications of these findings for the development of meteor burst communication systems, highlighting the challenges and opportunities associated with this unique propagation mode. Overall, this book offers a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and anyone interested in understanding the role of meteors in radio communications. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

October 28, 1959. The twoaminute noise breaks at each hour and half hour show the levels of galactic noise (at 0600 and 0630) or an inter fering signal (at 1000 and 1030) if present. In this example, the scatter-signal level is 10 to 20 db above the galactic-noise level. The relatively large meteoeurst signals appear as the Spikes which show above the scatter level. The interference-signal level is about 10 db above the galactic-noise level. (in this case, the interference is not strong enough to affect the desired data.) Other kinds of sig nals appear on the strip-charts, such as sporadicée signals which ap pear as a very high continuous Signal level or aurorally reflected Sig nals which often appear as a thin trace on the chart. Examples of these signal records are not Shown in this report but are similar to those shown in Figures 2a and 32 of Bailey et al.
