Help your child achieve her academic goals, connect with other children, and find personalized ways to tackle sensory overload.
Elementary and middle school are more than places where your child encounters important subjects like math, science, and language.
They are also the settings for some of the most important events she will experience—including discovering subjects that interest her and finding friends she can connect with.
There is a tendency in society, however, to view Autism as something that needs to be changed or “fixed.” In author Taylor Eberstadt’s first book, Raising an Autistic Girl, she highlighted the damage that can be caused when Autistic girls are encouraged to mask or hide their traits.
Taylor is a teacher and mom who was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 30. She knows the anger, sadness, and sense of isolation that arises in a world where Autistic girls are expected to understand and adapt to a neurotypical world that makes little effort to do the same.
Study after study has revealed that encouraging girls to mask their behaviors is harmful on many levels. It teaches them that something is inherently flawed within them and forces them to invest so much energy in hiding their authentic selves that they often feel tired, frustrated, and burnt out.
How can you blame them? Who would enjoy going to school if they were expected to be anyone but themselves?
The good news is that there are proven strategies to improve your child’s learning journey, help her make new friends, and find ways to soothe herself when she is feeling stressed.
This book provides you with these strategies, considering that the right person to lead the way is always your child.
In this book, you will discover:
- Differences in the Autistic brain and how they impact learning, social interaction, and sensory processing
- All the different options you can consider for your child’s schooling—from inclusion to special education, homeschooling, and unschooling
- The essential elements of a successful routine for Autistic girls, plus sample routines for morning, afternoon, and nighttime
- Proven strategies to enhance learning—from understanding your child’s learning style to helping her prepare for tests and assessments and boosting her confidence through her chosen areas of interest
- Exactly how sensory challenges can impact learning, and how to create a sensory map, request accommodations for your child’s school, and harness the power of soothing exercises
- Strategies for success in social interaction—how to support your child’s friendship preferences, encourage her to lean on unconditional friendships, and help her realize her worth
- Top new tech and websites to boost learning, communication, social skills, goal-setting, and more
- How to boost your child’s resilience, teach her to set healthy boundaries, and give her the tools she needs to nip bullying and other negative behaviors in the bud
And much more.
As a parent, you want your child to be happy at school, but you also want them to learn, find people they relate to, and feel safe and loved.
This book will help you equip her with the strategies and tools she needs to feel calmer, more at home, and more interested in learning about the wonderful world that surrounds her.
