Item description from seller

A very scarce, beautifully illustrated scientific work, presenting various elements of nature, as seen through a microscope. Very scarce. Early edition, presumed first. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Undated, dated from a copy held by the British Library. Beautifully illustrated with ninety-nine plates, ten of which are coloured, including the frontispiece. Colour plates courtesy of Spiers' daughter Edith. All remaining illustrations are from photographs and drawings by the author, with the assistance of J. F. Hammond. Collated, complete. Envelope tipped in to rear board, containing six relevant newspaper clippings and two microscopic photographs. A lovely natural sciences work, as seen through the microscope by microscopist William Spiers. In this volume, Spiers explores the intricacies of common flora, fauna, corals, insects and more. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Envelope tipped in to rear board, containing six relevant newspaper clippings and two microscopic photographs. Externally, very smart with minor bumping and rubbing, leading to subtle loss of cloth at spine head and tail. A few scattered marks to boards, including to the pasted pictorial plate of the front board. Internally, generally firmly bound with the rare delicate page throughout the text. Bright and clean with the odd spot, heavier to the first and last few pages. Very Good.
