Print on Demand. This book meticulously examines the evolution of English land and property law from the times of Anglo-Saxon settlers to the dawn of the thirteenth century. The book places this journey within the context of the turbulent social and political upheavals of the day. The author adeptly unpacks the complex legal frameworks that governed land acquisition, drawing upon historical documents such as charters and writs. The book showcases the gradual rise of feudalism, the erosion of communal land ownership, and the concentration of power in the hands of the aristocracy. This detailed study ultimately reveals how the introduction of the Norman legal system reshaped land tenure in England, forever altering the relationship between the Crown, landowners, and the peasantry. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

This is practically all we know from history of the land system of these early days. Several centuries elapsed from the time of Tacitus until the Saxons began their invasions of Britain. What happened in the mean time can only be conjectured, and indeed, as we shall see in the next chapter, it is long after the invasions were at an end before we have anything very definite on which to go. When, however, we do come again into the clear light of history we find much to suggest that the methods of which Tacitus wrote were employed by the invaders, the most abiding witness being the open field system of agriculture of which there are many traces even to-days.
