The natural history of Southwest England is rich and varied, with much to interest the experienced naturalist or the visitor. Roger Burrows, a naturalist who himself lives in Cornwall, gives a factual account of the various kinds of habitat in the area: the woodlands of valley and moorland edge, the wide variety of beach and cliff for which Devon and Cornwall are famous, the estuaries such as Exe, Fal and Tamar, the rivers and freshwater marshes, the inland cultivated areas and hedgerows, and the bleak masses of Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bodmin Moor. The plant and animal communities found in each area are discussed, as are seasonal changes. Checklists of species are included, and nature reserves and organisations of interest to anyone studying wildlife are listed. There are quantities of maps of different habitats, and some excellent photographs.
