Print on Demand. This book analyzes the perceived national characteristics of various countries and empires throughout history. The author connects the success and decline of nations to their treatment of foreigners, their willingness to incorporate new societal elements, and the prevailing religious and political views of the time. By examining how societies across different eras have struggled or progressed, this book provides novel insights into forces that shape and transform national character and dynamics. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

- Political Theory and History
But it is not needful to go to the antipodes for subjects affording abundant Scope for the most protracted and profound research. The nations of Europe and the people of our own country, linked by every tie that can bind nations together, and exerting a great and rapidly increasmg Influence upon each other, and, by consequence, upon the individuals of each, constitute the most inter esting and instructive subjects Of our proper study. In the remarks I propose making upon this theme, I Shall not attempt an elaborate exposition of the characteristic traitsof the nations alluded to. Neither my time nor your patience would permit such an examination, even were I capaple, by observation, reading and reflection to undertake it. I propose, instead, to invite your attention only to some of the peculiar and salient traits which characterize a few of the leading nations, and have contributed to their greatness, their decadence and their fall, or which still con tinue to exercise a controlling influence over their destiny.
