The text covers all sorts of topics, including the author's first view of Japan, missionaries, bazaars, the residence of the American Consul, residence of the British Mission, Japan's government, a Japanese funeral, future prospects of Japan, the Chinese climate, impressions of China, etc. Appendices include a note on prostitution, supported and protected by the government in Japan.
