Write names as they sound—using Han'gŭl
What's Your Name? is an award-winning guide to writing names in Han'gŭl (also spelled Hangul or Hangeul)—the Korean alphabet—without needing to learn the Korean language. Unlike most modern resources, this book draws from the original 15th-century design of Hangul to offer a more accurate, flexible way to represent names from any language.
Step-by-step instruction using original and modern methods
Step by step, readers learn how to overcome the limitations of today's simplified system and write names as they actually sound. Designed for clarity and accessibility, this book includes diagrams, pronunciation tables, practice exercises, and multilingual examples covering English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, and more.
What's inside the book?
- Clear diagrams showing tongue and mouth positions for each sound
- Tables comparing Hangul with English, French, Spanish, German, and Russian
- Step-by-step quizzes that reinforce each transcription rule
- Visual symbols drawn from historical Hangul, fully explained
- Example names transcribed from multiple languages
Rediscover Han'gŭl as a universal phonetic tool
Along the way, readers also explore Hangul's rich history and forgotten functions—reclaiming it as a universal phonetic tool. Whether you're a language lover, teacher, cultural explorer, or simply someone who wants to see their name written the way it sounds, this book opens a new path.
Every name deserves to be heard
With recognition from the Nonfiction Book Awards and The BookFest Awards, What's Your Name? is more than a transcription manual—it's a reminder that every name deserves to be heard as it truly is.
