Paperback. In the world of the bourgeoisie and aristocrats, names are everything. They are currency that cannot be bartered but give their owners access, respect and above all, protection from the laws that govern those unfortunate souls who belong to classes without names, people who might as well be nameless. To the narrator of Constance Debre's third novel, her name is a dead weight to cut herself free from. Tracing a family legacy of aristocrats and politicians, including her late grandfather, a former president of France, the narrator unravels a tapestry of relationships and bonds made fraught by addiction, pride and grief. As her parents struggle with substance abuse and their own histories, our narrator becomes resolute in her choice to live an existence unencumbered by responsibility, expectations, and a name she has long been ready to part with. France's latest international star continues her ascent with an excavation of her famous family's legacy Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

'Brilliantly spiky ... As well as boasting compelling, sharp prose, Name forces readers to question what one's name means - and to who' AnOther Magazine, Best Books of 2025
'Unsettling and beautiful, admirably unabashed' Los Angeles Review of Books
'Debré's voice is Camusian, comic, stark, relentless and totally hypnotic' Rachel Kushner
'Written with edge and urgency in a voice that is both vulnerable and in full command' Colm Tóibín
'Annie Ernaux, just edgier. Her prose is gorgeously spare and practical' Irish Independent
Name is Debré's most intense novel yet, a fresh feat of sharp, spare, yet explosive prose. Set partly in the narrator's childhood, it explores ideas about origins and reshapes relationships to our various inheritances: name, family, class, habits. As the novel unravels, freedom is revealed as a redefining of these relationships on one's own terms. Brilliant and unflinching, Name affirms and extends Debré's radical project.
